This conference is the second installment of a two-part celebration of the new edition of Critical Terms for Religious Studies (University of Chicago Press, May 2025), edited by Sarah Hammerschlag, John Nuveen Professor of Religion and Literature, Philosophy of Religions, and History of Judaism in the Divinity School. On each panel, contributors to Critical Terms will consider the future of the field of religious studies. Particular focus will be given to the role the study of religion plays within the university, including how the field draws on methods from the humanities and social sciences and how its understanding of concepts like race, law, and disability differs from other disciplines.
